What is a CEFR test?
CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages — the international standard for describing language ability. It sorts proficiency into six levels, from A1 (beginner) up to C2 (near-native). A CEFR test estimates where you sit so you know exactly what to work on next.
What the test measures
The CEFR levels, explained
| Level | Name | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Beginner | Understand and use familiar everyday phrases. |
| A2 | Elementary | Handle simple, routine exchanges on familiar topics. |
| B1 | Intermediate | Deal with most situations while travelling; describe experiences. |
| B2 | Upper intermediate | Understand complex text and interact with fluency. |
| C1 | Advanced | Use the language flexibly and effectively for most purposes. |
| C2 | Proficient | Understand virtually everything with ease and precision. |
How it works
The test adapts across skills and grades your answers against the CEFR "can-do" descriptors, then gives an overall level plus a per-skill result — so you can see if, say, your reading is ahead of your writing. Your result is saved, and you can retake it any time to watch yourself climb. It's a fast, CEFR-aligned estimate to place you and track progress — not an accredited exam or official certificate.
After the test: learn by actually reading
Once you know your level, Vocxel writes you stories, articles and dialogues at exactly that level, on any topic you choose. Tap any word to understand and save it, and it comes back in future readings until it sticks. See how Vocxel works →
